Correct housing and feeding is the basis of dog’s health. If the owner wants his cocker spaniel to be healthy, he should not forget about special preventive measures for dogs. So, for example, the whole problem is long ears of a cocker. This prevents ears from ingress of foreign bodies in external ear canal, but it also blocks normal ventilation of an ear, which can cause an inflammation in ears.
In anticipation of an inflammation ears should be cleaned every week, because inflammation arises as a result of accumulation and decomposition of earwax, penetration of parasites and ingress of cold water in an ear. Symptoms are noticeable: dog tosses its head, rubs its ear, an unpleasant smell is in the air. Treatment begins with mechanical removal of discharges by wad of cotton wool. Procedure repeats until cotton wool does not remain pure after using. If the inflammation began, treatment is usually long and your dog should undergo treatment under supervision of the doctor.
Eyes of a cocker should be an object of constant attention too. It can be mucous in it after sleeping. Remove mucous by pure gauze tampon or a linen rag. Cotton wool or paper napkins irritate a mucous tunic. Blepharitis and conjunctivitis can be caused by draught, dust, glaring sunlight or internal illnesses. Symptoms are reddening of eyelids, appearance of scales and crusts, falling out of eyelashes, epiphora, outflow of purulent discharge, swelling of palpebral conjunctiva. For softening it is necessary to rub synthomycin emulsion and to put drops in conjunctival glands. Of course, you must consult a doctor. It is possible to rinse eyes with strong tea.
As a dentifrice it is possible to offer a cocker to nibble rusks and hard vegetables. But if teeth nevertheless become yellow, it is possible to clean them with chalk and rag. As a scaler one or two times a week you can use wadded tampon moistened in 3 percent hydrogen peroxide or in tomato paste. Dental tartar is a dental plaque, which is composed of salts and rests of food, especially if your dog is old. It causes an inflammation with putrefactive odour and can fester a suppuration of roots of teeth and their loss.
If your cocker runs a lot you should not cut claws. But if claws do not grind off, it is necessary to cut off their tips, trying not to touch a sensitive basis of a claw, which usually has darker color. In winter, after walk with a cocker, it is necessary to flush from feet the rests of salt, by which streets are sprinkled, or it can become the reason of a strong inflammation. Pads and toes should be powdered from time to time and dubbed by fat ointment.
