Dog Training Using The Clicker Method. Hype Or Fact?

There are numerous training techniques that can be found on the internet. One such training program which has become incredibly popular recently is clicker method training. It would appear that everywhere you look you see endorsements to the clicker method. Maybe there’s a ton of hype going on with this method or it is something worth checking out. In this article we will look and see what the clicker method training is all about.

In truthEssentially, clicker method training is not that new. It has existed for some years but has recently has come back in fashion. Essentially it centers around using a small device which is called a clicking box or just a clicker which you push in with your thumb creating an audible clicking noise.

By clicking the clicker strategically whilst interacting with your pet dog, he will begin to understand what a single click or a double click translates to without having to give a vocal command or reward.

This is how it works: start by training your dog in the normal way. You would first associate a click a treat and a couple of times a day, give your dog 5 treats and click the clicker each time he gets the treat. At some point your dog will be expecting his reward when he hears the sound of the clicker.

Then, demonstrate to the dog the command you want to get him to learn, such as ‘sit’. Give the dog a command, demonstrating what you want your dog to do and when the dog successfully follows your command then reward the dog with a treat and while rewarding the dog click the clicker. Afterwards begin to click as soon as the correct action has been taken. If asking the dog to sit, for instance, just as soon as his rear end hits the floor, then give the reward. Then introduce the word command ‘sit’. Guess what, in no time at all your dog will know exactly what to do when you say sit!

Dogs, just like people achieve more through rewards rather than punishment. As your dog learns, he will become more tuned in to the sound of the click as a positive reward rather than the treat.
