Tear staining is a very common issue with pet owners around the globe. Tear stains are a reddish, brown color blotch that appear around the eyes of pets, and also emit an unpleasant odor. They are also very irritating. The reddish, brown nature of a tear stain makes it hard to remove, but not impossible. Stains are very common among different animals, but are easily spotted on pets with white or light colored coats. Tear stains on dogs and cats can also cause a great deal of chronic pain.

Doctors agree that their is a variety of different causes of tear stains on dogs and cats.
The most widely agreed on cause is excess tearing. Excess tearing around a dog’s face will wet the fur, making it a breeding ground bacteria and other infections. The most common of these is red yeast, which gives most dog eye stains the brownish, red color to their coat. Another cause of excess tearing is a minor infection in the tear ducts, causing them to produce more tears than normal.
Covered Tear Ducts. Excessive maltese tear staining can be caused by closed tear ducts. This also effects other breeds, but is most commonly seen in a maltese. A large percent of all Maltese dogs are born with closed tear ducts, so be sure to see a veterinarian if your maltese is suffering from tear stains.
Ear Infections. Ear infections can be a major cause resulting in tear staining in dogs. Most ear infections in dogs are caused by ears wet after a bath. Be sure to use a product like Nolvasan Otic to keep earns clean and dry. This product also helps fight bacteria on the face.
Teeth Cutting. Cutting teeth are another major cause of tear stains in dogs. Before they are one year of age, many dogs will cut their adult teeth, causing a great deal of pressure on the tear ducts. This pressure will cause many dogs to have tear stains for the first time. Be sure to keep your dogs face dry during this period.
Flees. Flees are a huge reason for eye stains in dogs. Flees dwell on the moisture in a dog’s coat and deposit incredible amounts of bacteria with is a breeding ground for yeast infections. It is important to use a specific shampoo for bathing that prevents this moisture.
There are a few other causes of tear staining, but these are the most common. Other factors that contribute are genetics, food and water.
