There are thousands of dogs surrendered to shelters and dog homes each week, around the country. The most people who owned them didn’t set out to have to submit their dog, but something went badly wrong with the union between the pet and its human family.
Too many folks don’t take pet ownership significantly enough. They think that their dog will just turn out alright, with very little input. The lovely little puppy dog speedily grows into a demanding and boisterous adolescent, and the humans have no ideas how to deal with it.
If you have a dog in your residence, you are accountable for its health, protection and training. A trained dog is a happiness to have around and adds a new element to your life. A trained animal has very good manners, is friendly to your visitors and becomes a welcome pet as you go about your day-to-day programs.
An untrained dog, on the other hand, is not a pleasure to have around your house; it has no manners, demonstrates improper conduct around other people and is unthinkable to take out with you. These pets are often referred to as problem pets, frustrating, unmanageable and disobedient. They are relegated to the back yard, deprived of company, chained up and all too often surrendered to dog shelters because the humans in their life can’t endure with their behavior and do not understand how to correct it.
When must you start to train a young puppy?
Training can start as early as you bring your new puppy home. She is going to be feeling somewhat lost and alone; she’s been parted from her litter friends for the first time and taken to some completely new environment. Her new home will look, sound and smell completely different to everything she has ever known.
Put yourself in the pup’s position for a moment. How would you feel if you were taken away from the only life you knew, by people you’d never known before, and put in a place that was absolutely unfamiliar to you?
I’ll bet you would howl and cry a bit too!
Have a place fixed aside for the new puppy, that she can call her own. Have it out of the way, in a draught-free space, but close enough to the actions in the house that she can hear you.
Make her a great, comfortable bed out of something soft and cuddly, like an old, clean blanket. Have a soft toy that she can call her own – a puppy is used to having warm bodies to sleep against and snuggle up to. An old ticking clock, wrapped in a towel is a perfect idea; the sound mimics her mother’s heartbeat and will be comforting for the 1st few nights in her completely new home. Often, a hot water bottle, partially filled with warm water helps a new dog settle down.
Round her bed, spread newspapers on the floor. A dog will never soil or wet her bed, and the paper is the start of toilet training your pup. A dog is required to pee and poop, exactly like you do. She does not know where you want her to do it, unless you show her. There will be accidents, usually, so take that.
Never reprimand your pup for toilet accidents; just wash it up without any fuss and don’t forget to take her out to her toilet spot more frequently. Whenever you take your pup outside to her toilet spot, always go out the same door; put some magazine down at this door as she will quickly relate that as way to her toilet spot. Be vigilant with a young puppy – walk her outside often enough to prevent accidents. If she starts to sniff around one spot, she needs to go!
