Settling a puppy into their new home is a very exciting experience for all and with little planning things will go smoothly or as smoothly as they can with a new puppy.

One of the things you need to give some thoughts is the equipment you will need for the little one:

A new puppy will need a safe and secure place to sleep and placing a ticking clock near their bed will calm them when they are in their bed because it is like their mothers heartbeat.

It is necessary to have a supply of toys that they can chew on and play with. Puppies love old stuffed toys and these can be bought cheaply from a recycle shop or garage sale.

The chewing toys are really quite important. More so than many dog lovers actually realize. The reason is the following: Your puppy will grow his teeth and naturally, he is going to want to chew. Now the choice is yours, should it be chewing toys or furniture?

Of course, your puppy will also need to eat and to drink. So food and drinking dishes will be needed. Just get one of each. They do not need to be fancy, but practical. Also get some puppy dog food and milk.

Furthermore, you will want to take your dog for walks, so you will inevitably need both a collar and a leash. Once you have those you can gradually start your dog training.

Additionally, if you choose to crate train your dog, you will not get around getting a create either. Moreover, you might also want to consider buying a few warm clothes if you live in a cold climate.

One of the most important things one needs for a new puppy is love and attention. If you give a puppy the attention and training they need then they will repay you with unconditional love tenfold.

Who hasn’t heard the saying that old dogs cannot be taught new tricks? Well, I do not necessarily agree with this statement 100%.

In terms of difficulty, training older dogs does not differ too much from training puppies. However, when training older dogs you have to be conscious of the fact that you need to handle them differently than you would handle the little ones.

A lot of people would testify that training older dogs is, in fact, easier because of a number of reasons:

Older dogs have learned the meaning of the word “no”; older dogs are less energetic and calmer; and, older dogs understand dominance so he’d be more susceptible to learning through your guidance and leadership.

So when the big day comes, you will bring your old dog home for the first time. Now, you need to toilet train him. He will not know where he is allowed to go to the bathroom, so it is up to you to show him. Also bear in mind that his system might be a little bit upset from traveling, so be ready.

Before bringing your dog into the house, show him his bathroom area. Stay here until he has done his business. Beware: This might take some time. Do not expect him to do it immediately. Just try and stay calm and relaxed and wait. When he does do it, positively reinforce this behavior with a treat. This should motivate him and help him to remember this area faster.

And then in you go: Bring him inside and let him check out the house. And always remember that just because he understands where his toilet is, he might not be able to tell you when he needs to go.

Be sure to look for signs and take him out. Do not forget to praise him. Once his system’s gone back to normal, you may schedule his trips to the bathroom area as you would to a puppy: Once in the morning, every after meals, after playtime, and before bed at night.

Each time you bring him outside and he does his business, praise him. And should accidents ever happen, just clean it up and continue as planned. Do NOT punish him.

Some would make them as a best friend or someone who can be talked to but of all these, there’s one main reason why folks desire to have a dog, and that’s because us individuals need them. Not because they can defend us from danger but they are recognized nowadays as a part of the family.

Since dogs are treated as part of the family these days, they’re also given balanced care and love. So when dogs and pets nowadays get colds or become ill, they are delivered to the nearest veterinarian in the city. Sickness and colds are just some of the possible illness a dog can get. Some can really hurt the dog or even us owners through these diseases that are really contagious. And these diseases are known as mange in dog.

Mange in Dog Signs and Symptoms

The concept of mange in dog is just the cover of the box. Inside will be the real mean thing. Mange in dog are often identified through the red spots that could be found in the skin. Yet another factor that’s very obvious if your dog has this disease could be the frequent itching in their skins until the hairs fall apart and leave a scar in your dog’s skin.

Mange in Dog Kinds and Sorts

Demodectic Mange in Dog

There are actually 3 varieties of mange in dog that could be found. 1 is the demodectic mange in dog which is also known as demodicosis or red mange in dog and is caused by Demodex canis, a quite tiny mite that can’t be seen without having the aid of the microscope. This kind of mange in dog seriously attacks dog with really low immune systems like elderly dogs and puppies from 3 months old up to 1 year old. Puppies usually get these mites from their mother. Nevertheless, this type of mange in dog is not that contagious to humans but these requirements veterinary action as soon as possible. Medicated shampoo and application of insecticide is among the recommended home remedy.

Sarcoptic Mange in Dog

This type of illness is also referred to as scabies, a very tiny burrowing mite and is actually a really contagious disease in their world. They burrow their way through the dog’s skin and lay their eggs there, giving the dog a really itchy effect in its skin. Eggs that are burrowed will just take days to hatch and gives the hatchlings less than 3 weeks to lay their own eggs. Damaged skin could take up to weeks or even months to recover based on how massive the illness is already. Frequent bathing is suggested to relieve the irritated skin.

Cheyletiella Mange in Dog

Another name for this kind of disease is the walking dandruff, a quite easy to identify illness because of the dandruff dusting that may be discovered over the dog’s back, neck and head. This type of disease is highly contagious, however, they will only last for a later time following leaving its host.

Dogs are generally loved and cared. So we should take care of them and let’s keep them away from mange in dog and enable them enjoy their life to the fullest!

Digging like barking is a natural behavior of dogs. Dogs have ultra sensitive sense of smell. Apart from having a high level of intelligence dogs are noted to have retentive memories too. Days after burying their “treasures” a dog will still know where to dig. Eating mud is associated with the dog’s habit of digging and eating whatever bones and other treasures they have dug. Puppies are curious of their environment and in the process of investigating their world, puppies would use their mouth. It is believed that dogs have acquired a taste for eating mud and other non-edible objects and substances. Your dogs fondness for mud can be due to other reasons.

Dogs not only have weird habits, they also have an uncanny ability to know what is wrong with their system and mud eating is believed to be the dog’s cure for upset stomach and worm infestation. Dogs eat anything thus stomach upsets are expected. Worm infestation is also a common concern of dogs because of their habit to eat feces. Some dogs are fed poor quality commercial food thus in an effort to fill up a nutrient deficiency, the dogs would eat mud.

A health concern can be the reason why the dog eats mud. A dog with maldigestive or malabsorptive disorders would not benefit from the nutrients of the eaten food. Although the dog is provided with premium quality food, the dog will still have nutrient deficiency. As mentioned, dogs have the ability to correct what is wrong with the system and in this case the dog would eat mud.

Dogs are social animals that would thrive well in an atmosphere where they are given opportunities to interact with the family. If attention is not given the dog will try to get the attention of the family. Boredom would make a dog destructive and the owner should be thankful of the less destructive habit of eating mud rather than be made to deal with the destruction on belongings created by the pet.

Dogs have come a long way – from surviving on their own in the wild, dogs are now well cared pets. Since domestication, dogs have become not only well loved pets but surrogate children of their owners . Dogs are well loved and highly valued pets and because they are considered as members of the family they will be provided with all the comforts imaginable. Needless to say, the dog will be provided with nutritious foods.

Modern day dogs are indeed very lucky as their owner will ensure that they will never go hungry. In spite of this fact, dog owners will still see the pet eating non-food items. Will you leave the dog to an animal shelter if you see that the pet has again decided to make mince meat of the antique chair’s legs?

Dog owners have always been concerned by the pet’s propensity to eat non-food items. Dogs really
Continue reading Why Do Dogs Eat Wood

Dogs really do have big appetites. This is the reason why pet owner ensure that the dog is provided with sufficient supply of food. However, dogs would still ingest anything that caught their fancy because these animals are indiscriminate eaters. The inquisitiveness as well as the excellent scenting ability often results to the ingestion of non-edible things.

Dogs have the inclination to eat grasses, rocks, rotten animals and feces. Rotten things and feces are disgusting to us humans. The dog’s habit of eating wood is therefore much better than the habit of eating feces and rotting animals. Although less disgusting, the habit of eating wood must be stopped as well. A pet owner would not really mind the changing the furniture eaten by the dog but what the owner will be concerned with is the danger to the dog’s life. It is therefore necessary to understand why dogs eat wood. The wood eating habit of the pet must be stopped

Boredom will motivate a dog to eat wood. Dogs would need to have the attention of the family. To get the family’s attention, the dog would eat wood. It is believed that dogs would eat wood if the diet is deficient in nutrients. Dogs that are fed poor quality commercial dog food would eat wood in an effort to fill up the imbalance in the system. These concerns can be easily corrected. An owner simply needs to bond with the pet. A premium quality dog food would be more expensive but surely it would be a more viable option than having to replace the furniture continuously.

Snow with fresh or candied fruit toppings is also a favorite dessert. What do you know – dogs, like their human friends also love the refreshing coolness of snow. However, unlike humans, dogs really love to eat even plain snow. What is so special about snow that makes dogs love it? Is the dog thirsty because you always forget to fill its water bowl?

By eating snow, dogs in the wild have survived the winter months when the rivers and streams are frozen. Pet dogs are commonly pampered thus there is no need to eat snow as enough food and water are provided by the owners. However, we know that dogs are naturally curious. Sparkling white snow would be very interesting to the curious dog. The sensation of the cold snow on warm tongue would tempt the dog to take another mouthful. The pet would find eating freshly fallen snow enjoyable and the doting owner would not have the heart to stop the pet more so because eating snow is not dangerous.

If the dog’s stomach is filled with snow, the dog’s body temperature will be lowered. This will trigger a shivering reflex that may lead to hypothermia. Another danger that can result from the dog’s habit of eating snow is poisoning. Unlike the fruit flavored Sno Cones that people love to eat, the snow eaten by the dog can be laced with anti freeze and other poisonous substances. This would naturally result to poisoning.

A medical concern may be the reason why the dog eats snow excessively. The dog’s propensity to ingest snow may be due to an undiagnosed health concern like kidney or thyroid disease. Dogs with diabetes and Cushing’s disease will eat snow to satisfy the huge appetite that is a manifestation of the disease. These medical concerns have to be addressed to curb the dog’s inclination to eat snow.

Canine seizures can last for a couple of minutes but severe forms of seizures can last for hours. The sight of a seizing dog is frightening but the pet owner must remain calm to be able to do the necessary things that will help the dog. The very first thing that a pet owner must do is to ensure that the pet is comfortable and that no further injuries will happen to the dog. Keep the dog away from staircase and remove objects that can hurt the dog. It would help if the dog’ surrounding is dimmed and made quiet

Owners of seizing dogs would not want other pet owners to have the same scary experience. Generally, seizures are recurring incidents and it would be very beneficial if the dog owner is aware what triggers the seizure. Canine seizure can be attributed to a number of reasons. The seizure though is commonly attributed to canine epilepsy. The recurring seizures are caused by the uncontrolled activity of the brain. This type of seizure is more prevalent in Cocker Spaniel, GSD, Keeshond and Poodle. Brain tumors that develop and put pressure on the brain area where it is growing is another reason why a dog can have seizures.

Medical conditions such as canine distemper, kidney and liver disease as well as the tick borne Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease can be the reason for the dog’s seizure. Dogs with these medical conditions are noted to have episodes of seizures. Dogs would eat anything. Even well fed ones will not steer clear of the trash can to rummage for spoiled food.

The curious nature often leads the dog to danger. Many dogs have seized and died due to ingestion of toxic substances. Ingestion of toxic substances would make a dog seize but full recovery is possible if the dog is given prompt medical assistance. Unlike seizures associated with canine epilepsy, this kind of seizure must be given prompt medical attention to save the life of the pet.

Dogs have made a significant influence on the way people live. The close bond pet owners have with their dogs is one of the joys of keeping these affectionate and loyal animals. Unlike cats, dogs become too dependent on their owners.

Dogs would thrive well in a situation where they are constantly given attention and where they are allowed to be in the company of the human family. Because of this, dogs are dubbed as Velcro pets. Dog owners would want to have an affectionate and loyal pet but the strong bond can lead to separation anxiety and as no owner would want to have an unmanageable pet, a lot of dogs with this behavioral concern are either abandoned or euthanized. Because of separation anxiety a dog can develop destructive behaviors.

A dog owner is presumed ready to tackle the barking, chewing and other canine behaviors. In dogs with separation anxiety disorder, the normal canine behaviors becomes destructive behaviors. In a dog with separation anxiety disorder, the barking, digging, chewing and other normal canine behaviors becomes excessive every time the dog is separated from the owner. Dogs with severe separation anxiety disorder not only manifest excessive and destructive canine behaviors but also mutilates its body because of panic attacks.

What causes dogs to have separation anxiety? Being social creatures, dogs would always love to interact with all the members of the family. Dogs are seen following their masters around. Dogs accustomed to following the owner around would have panic attacks if the owner is not seen. It is necessary for dog owners to take the role of the leader of the pack. Dogs, especially those with weak willed owners would think of themselves as the leader of the pack and consider humans as pack members lower in rank. Dogs that consider themselves as the leader of the pack suffer from separation anxiety when separated from the owner.

Abused and abandoned dogs commonly suffer from separation anxiety. Dogs that start to be destructive as soon as the master leaves home are suffering from separation anxiety disorder. At the sight of the master picking the car keys or taking the coat from the rack will trigger a panic attack and make the dog starts its destructive behavior.

The coarse, long and larger hairs found above the eyes, on the upper lip and on the chin of animals are the vibrissae or the commonly known whiskers. It seems that the fur covering the dog is not enough as they would still be seen sporting whiskers. Whiskers are longer, thicker and larger hair so that even among the fur, whiskers will be very noticeable. The roots of whiskers are set three times deeper than ordinary hair. Unlike the ordinary hairs, whiskers are considered as live hairs because the network of nerves on the roots of these hairs make them ultra sensitive receptors.

Dogs have many outstanding qualities one of which is their heightened senses. These animals have legendary hearing and scenting abilities. Dogs’ ability to see is admirable as well as compared to human eyes, the eyes of dogs can see much better in the dark. In spite of these outstanding abilities dogs receive yet another gift from nature that further enhance the senses – the whiskers. Whiskers are very sensitive to the touch and serves as radar or antennae.

The roots of these special hairs are embedded on a network of nerves so that when they are touched or when the tips brush against objects, the nerves will transmit a message to the brain and the dog will be able to sense nearby objects. Whiskers are vital tools that allow dogs to follow prey in their burrows. Dogs don’t have shoulders and the body is a bit wedge shaped so that it would be easy to go in but going out would be difficult. Nature is truly amazing as the dog is provided with whiskers that are a bit longer than the rest of the fur. Because these hairs are so sensitive, the dog will be informed if it is possible to enter or not.

Whiskers are also used as the dog’s self preservation tools. Whiskers have helped dogs evade predators. Whiskers are so sensitive they can pick up the things that terrorize the dog’s predators. Dogs will subconsciously use these fears to terrorize the predators.

Due to the sensitivity, the area where whiskers grow must be handled with care as rubbing the hair or patting the face will make the pet very uncomfortable. Plucking whiskers must be avoided as not only would be it remove the hair that enhances the dog’s senses but it will also cause bleeding given the fact that whiskers are deeply rooted about 3 times more than the normal hair.
