American Foxhound
The American Foxhound has an appearance very similar to that of a Beagle. The dog measures from 21 to 25 inches at the withers and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. The streamlined athletic body is thickly covered with a short fur that ranges in color from tan and white, red and white and the impressive combination of black, tan and white. The admirable speed of this excellent hunter is attributed to the well boned strong legs.
The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony – long before it was given the name America. The breed originated from the pack of English hunting dogs that was brought to the Crown Colony by Robert Brooke in 1650.
These excellent hunting dogs were highly valued in their country of origin. The British landed gentry utilizes these dogs to hunt foxes. On a fox hunt, packs of American Foxhounds will chase the prey while hunters follow on horseback. Hunters will know if a prey is found by the change in the melodious barking of the hounds. New World settlers utilize the dog in the same manner. However, because of the ferocious tenacious nature, it was rumored that the dogs were utilized by the English military commanders to track and hunt Indians.
The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed – the American Foxhound. The American Foxhound, a versatile breed of dog was born.
An American Foxhound is basically a hunting dog. This dogs would love nothing more than to hunt. This breed is equipped with a sensitive scenting ability, strength and stamina and a strong prey drive. Once this dog has found an interesting scent nothing can stop the dog from trailing the prey. Foxes are the usual quarry of American Foxhounds but these dogs hunts other animals too.It is not surprising if this breed is on the top list most valued hunting dogs.
American Foxhounds are highly valued for their excellent hunting abilities. Although the dogs exhibit a courageous and tenacious temperament when hunting, American Foxhounds have a sweet and gentle personality. American Foxhounds have gained a reputation for being courageous and tenacious hunters but in the company of its human family the dogs turn into gentle well mannered companions. This breed of dogs gives its loyalty and friendship not only to one person. An American Foxhound loves all the members of the family but the dogs are noted to be especially friendly and affectionate with the children.
