Dog – Dog Stop Jumping Up On Me Like That

Oh no! Those were clean white pants – before your pooch jumped up on you with muddy paws – that is. Your dog could really hurt a child or elderly person by jumping up and knocking the person down. To avoid any injury, hard feelings or even a law suit it’s a good idea to train your dog not to jump up. Visit dog fence now for all of your dog training needs.

Jumping up behavior is usually meant as an affectionate gesture from the dog – he just wants to say hey. Unfortunately we often encourage this behavior. After all, who isn’t happy to see their pet after a long day at work and when he jumps up on you in an overjoyed greeting, you usually respond by petting and rewarding him!. So – if you know you shouldn’t be doing this – why do you keep doing it? Get your emotional needs met from other humans. It’s great to love your puppy, but you need to be the alpha leader of the pack first, and best buddy second – dogs really need that! Have you ever heard of the pop psych term codependency? Well, if you haven’t then look it up. If you’re allowing this type of behavior from your dog, and reveiving your own emotional fulfillment from it – STOP IT. All 4′s on the ground before puppy gets any love. It doesn;t matter if you’ve had a bad day and need love when you walk in the door. This is for your dog’s own good. You’ll both be much happier in the long run. Lack of training will manifest itself in many ways – so – be da man – or woman – and show them who is the boss.

So, how do we get started? I’m glad you asked. Believe it or not, the first thing you need to do is get your dog to do the undesired behavior – so that you can teach him what not to do. Now it’s time to get your dog to jump up on you – the opposite behavior of your end result – but as you continue reading you may just see the method to the madness here.

A really good way to teach this anti jumping behavior is to gently lift your knee just as your dog is jumping up on you. I don’t mean to kick him – do this gently so that he is a little off balance causing him to go back down to all fours. Now, the moment you pup encounters your knee, he’s going to be surprised – and that’s the time for the firm command – OFF. When your dog goes down to all paws on the ground, you need to reward them and praise them.

Now, your first thought might be to use the word Down for this but if you have already used it as the command for lay down then you will need to pick another word.

This technique, however, does not work in all cases, especially with small dogs, so there is a technique using a leash or collar. If you are in this category and you have a small dog – what you need to use instead of your knee – is their leash or collar. Just give it a little tug and issue the command as with teh knee technique. And, of course, don’t forget the praise and reward.

Consistency is the primary thing here. Don’t ever let the unwanted bahavior slide. You need to get used to watching your pet very carefully, so you begin to sense when he’s about to jump. The objective here is to get to the point where you intercept him/her before they ever get the chance to jump – then you’re home free.
